yeah, after seeing some gifs of last night’s supernatural, I will not be watching it.

fuck you, spn writers, for your continual assassination of a character I love, and retconning of abuse into what was, in the early seasons, a fucked up but loving family dynamic.

seriously, fuck you.

They're really dropping all the balls this season, aren't they?

I actually did watch last nights episode and I really enjoyed it. It was a bright shiny moment in an otherwise entirely crap-filled season. There was no abuse and I don't think John was made out to be any worse than we've ever seen before.

haha I AM SO TORN MEL. But they didn't out right say he was abusive or anything. They made him, from Dean's POV, a stone cold hard ass, but again: is this really news? And also shamefully of course I was hoping he actually WOULD beat Dean because I am a pervert. but uh, I digress.

THE REAL SHAME IS THE FACT THAT THEY MADE 16-YO DEAN'S EYES BROWN. Did they really think that they could get away with that???

I've had your email open since I received it - I'm a terrible person, and also, a friend came into town and ended up needing to crash here so shiny objects. I shall endeavor to reply tonight :) sorry for the wait!

I think it was Sam's POV in which John looked like a hard ass, not Dean's. Dean seemed to think John was completely reasonable.

Sam was all 'He left you here for TWO MONTHS?!' and Dean was all 'Duh, I LOST OUR MONEY. His hands were tied, dude'.

As you say, par for the course :)

Yeah, you know the more I think about this ep, the more it hurts my feelings. So much doesn't add up. Why was Dean gambling? How is saying, "Sammy, I lost Dean on a hunt" better than "I left your brother in juvie to teach him a lesson???" Sam wouldn't have been scarred for life?

And I heard that originally Dean was supposed to have been 14 here. Which to me makes WAY more sense. A)Is it likely he would have waited until 16 for a kiss? B)His punk ass attitude implies an objective awareness of his dad's thrall over him, which simply isn't true until he's like, 30. It's easier to pass off the attitude as the knee-jerk response of the newly enhormoned. It's established fact that Dean loved John and didn't question the mission. C)Sam, if he'd been 12 there, looks like he's a little, erm, slow. It really only jibes if he's 10. And even that's a stretch. What, was he some kind of princess that Dean and John conspired to keep in the dark as long as possible about literally everything?

Not to mention the devil's traps, don't even get me started. Ha, uh. I think maybe I have feelings about this episode. This is the first time I've attempted to type them.

ANYWAY ita: It's really more Sam's pov this ep on the condition of Dean's woobiefied little stay at the magic farm.

Also, hi there! How's it going? Would you ever be interested in doing a little beta work, by chance?

Yeah, the whole thing would have made a lot more sense if Dean was 14. Plus, lots of other stuff wrong, blah blah... mostly I was just happy to have something that didn't suck as much as the rest of this sucktastic season :P Plus, I really had fun watching it. It felt so much like classic SPN, I had this goofy smile the whole time.

And hello! If you need a beta for something, feel free to send me a PM :)

lol from your thread, I'm glad I gave it a miss. and that's what grabbed me first, I was like, wait, that kid is supposed to be Dean? thafuck? I haven't seen any screencaps of the kid that was Sammy in the ep so idk but casting fail.

and yeah I don't think it was any worse than we've gotten before but I don't think you understand the vitriol on tumblr, haha. jaysus, all these johnny-come-latelies HATE John and fall on any perceived neglect or abuse like hyenas.

but still (and keeping in mind this opinion is just based on the recaps of the ep I've seen), it doesn't make sense to me that John would leave Dean solo and unprotected if he could at all help it? there have been so many things re: John's characterization since s3 that seem ooc to me, and I don't give a fuck that it's canon because you know. lalala I can't hear you. a friend on tumblr had some great canon-repair or missed opportunity thoughts about this ep which I agree with 100% -

but anyway, I think I'm done with future episodes of this show. I mean, I've been kind of blah and argh the last few seasons, but this was kind of the thing that lets me nip this last thread free. because idk, you can fuck with what happens to them in the present tense and fumble it and drop the ball but there's something about fumbling on pre-canon that is just intolerable to me.

this whole thing DID make me want to go back and watch the first few seasons and reread papa winchester fic

I don't really watch SPN, but if they're doing anything with John Winchester/JDM then I'm out ... out, gone, nope ... I've had some people try to get me to watch, but ... *shakes head* no.

What abuse? There is absolutely no abuse in this ep. What? *boggles*

There wasn't any outright abuse in this episode, really - nothing that hasn't already been established as something John Winchester would likely do :/

There's a *suspicion* of abuse, but Dean quickly makes it clear it wasn't his dad that hurt him but a monster they were fighting, so... not sure what you think happens in this ep?

It didn't leave me *thrilled* with Papa Winchester, that's true... but there wasn't any abuse :P

Hey - if you don't mind a drive-by comment from a lurker who reads your fic - I actually think it's not too hard to read this episode in a more John-positive light, though it does take a little creative interpretation. There's actually very little direct evidence of what John was thinking; just Dean's report and one line from a cop that John said to "let him rot in there" or something to that effect rather than trying to get him out. For some reason, my brain throws that together and comes up with "John clearly thought Dean needed a break, and this farm looked like a nice place (which it was!), but Dean was never going to go for that because he's not good at taking care of himself, so John played the hard-ass so Dean would do what he was told and get some rest."

Not to say you need to continue watching the show or anything, I just like this head-canon better.
