true! all the parental figures were so absent in the first fic, I decided I wanted his dad to be someone who means well and is fucking it up horribly. because you know, *that*'s reality, haha. also reality that a kid thinks his father is out to get him when really, he's just a loving dad who is too flawed a human being to do a good job
