lol, I love you and your feedback. you crack me up, and give me lots of details. yay!
It was a surprise - but it was a *believable* surprise. I'm so glad, because what you just walked me through is exactly what I was going for. I think it was ok for us to think he was a bad father as we were getting to know Spike, because Spike *really believes* he is, feels that. and in a way, wasn't he, for those lost years? he utterly dropped the ball on keeping his kid safe and happy. not that he was solely to blame. but I guess I wanted to bring in that bad father doesn't mean always bad father, and definitely doesn't mean bad person...he loves his kid. he's just out of his league on what to do with him. and then all those misunderstandings snowball.
plus I'm not Joss and I don't think all fathers are evil ;) I'm actually sure there are reasons Angel's dad is how he is, but he's so far gone, we're just gonna run away from him and never look back.
Now I envision Angel and Spike's dad getting all buddy buddy and going to hockey matches and watching golf on the weekend and Spike's dad helping Angel with his football throws or whatever and working on cars all to the tune of Bobby Goldsboro's "Watching Scotty Grow" with Spike standing to the side n the shadows with a scowl on his face and a hard on. LOL. you crack my shit up.
Spike's so adorably cranky when he doesn't get any. and yet, he still gives Angel the pepto bismol. <pets him>
