I understand you completely. I think as readers mature they do and will explore other pairings (I started with Spuffy but now read that much more selectively prefering other het pairings like Spaith, Spara, Spawn, Files and Fangel-us).
One of my favorite stories is that of Gigi (a girl in her mid teens (16?) who was being groomed to be a courtesan to follow in the footsteps of the other women in her family) set in the 1800's. Gigi loved and married Gaston, a man in his thirties, whom her family had known for a long while and had watched Gigi grow up. It was a beautiful story written by Colette (a brillant turn of the century writer). Even a Hollywood musical was based on it! I say all this to say well established literature bears this type of relationship out. Vive la Spawn.
