As for the water thing, I'm betting on the toilet too. At our house, we have this tub that...yeah, the previous owners didn't bother to put in a cement base and so it sinks in the middle and, you know, water puddles there. Even though my cats know exactly where the water bowl is and one of my kids gives them fresh water every day, I still catch them in that damn tub drinking left over shower/bath water from that puddle. *shudders* It drives me crazy, but I figure there's just some kind of inbred instinct thing telling them to search for their own food/water. Or maybe they're just arrogant and are secretly saying, 'Ha! See, I don't really need you to take care of me, I just put up with you because it amuses me.'
But...so cute! that Irving was calling for Seeley like that. When we got our second cat (Patch) a few years ago, she was like that with our older cat (Gizmo). She followed her around and Gizmo mothered her and cuddled with her and basically coddled her until Patch got over the trauma of the move.
