urban legend / scary story question

uh, so. I remember this story from when I was a kid. I have no idea where I heard it but I think I read it in a book at least once and I have the impression it's got oral history. like, I don't think that story I read was an original invention of the author so much as a retelling of a story that gets around. but that's just the impression I have, it could be the author's brainchild.

anyway.

it's like...some kids are out at a lakehouse or a cabin or something, and they're out in the woods or swimming at the lake or something and spot this creature and get freaked and make a mad dash for the cabin. and it tracks them back to the house, and it's big and kind of anthropomorphic but definitely not human and it's scary as all hell. and I wanna say it's chanting something as it follows them and tries to find a way into the house. of course, most of the story is made up of the suspense of it getting closer and closer and trying all the various windows and whatever.

for some reason, I remember one version of it where it gets in and all it wanted to do was return the girl's shirt. hahahaha. it turns out to be totally benign. but I wanna say there's another version where it's darker than that.

uh. so. does anyone know this story? and particularly, what was the creature called? if it was called something specific?
