I didn't see the episode, so I'm not sure how much info they gave on John's military background. But it occurred to me that if he'd just come back from war, or at least serving overseas in a rough area, then he'd no doubt be somewhat wide-eyed over just being back home, in relative safety, with the whole clean water/bathrooms/my language thing...that's what my brother said, at least, when he got back from serving in Turkey. I do think it's likely that *Mary* would consider him sheltered or innocent, due to his inexperience with the supernatural-wanting to protect a "civilian",etc-but that doesn't mean it's true.
I love your comments on this, very sharp. I'm GLAD they finally brought angels into the mix, as it makes for much better balance in plot concepts!
