:) I was hoping it would be a good surprise for people. *Spike* portrayed him as a complete bastard, because Spike's got issues over the fact that his father essentially abandoned him when his life went to shit, because you're right he didn't/doesn't know how to cope. but I knew very early on that just because Spike saw him that way, didn't mean his dad's motivations were more complicated.
after all, good people fuck up as parents all the time. that's why god invented therapy ;)
so glad you loved the bit about his eyes! it was actually a last-minute add-in, because I needed something to make Tom's belief that he'd never give away his son more convincing, and it seemed so organic. even where there's trouble with grown children, parents often have those mushy sentiments towards the birth of their offspring :)
