Well, I love both characters.

Angel first:

For trying so hard to be a good person, even though he's not a person at all.
The conflict was often palpable and wonderful.

For his absolutely dorky sense of delight. It makes me happy, too (ie: ice cream when he was human, dancing at Cordy's party, etc.). The grinning approval and abandon are a joy to behold.

For his trust in others, even though he's been fooled time and time again over the centuries.

For throwing himself into fathering, even at the expense of his friendships and his own path.

I'm afraid I also love the light switch that is Angel's delight in being unleashed as Angelus. Reveling in the bloodshed and rediscovering the fun of the demon is played so well that I'm almost happy for the character even as he's wreaking havoc.

Spike:

For being a slave to his emotions and hating himself for it. He continually humiliates himself, human and vampire alike, trying to be loved in return.

For having such an innate sense of fun. Even though he thought bashing skulls and running amok was fun for decades, he makes it look like a good time.

For taking every opportunity to try to make Angel and Buffy lighten up and get off their "champion" high horse. I also loved him putting Buffy back on that horse in Season 7.

For his inability to shut up time and time again. It made me laugh and cringe in turns.

For fostering such rabid interest in his sex life. It's amazing how easily this character fits with everybody in the Jossverse...yes, it's delightful.
