It's amazing, reading two stories of yours at the same time, and finding myself completely immersed in the very separate worlds at separate times. Your writing is all-encompassing without being too wordy, something I work hard to strive for in mine. Every description is very tightly wrapped around, with no wasted words left in a dead hang.
Oh man, doing it on the swingset -- ha! Faith's line made me laugh, too. And Fred's comment about having missed her father's laughter is very fitting, coming from her. She's one to notice, but not one to always tell right away. I don't know how you find the ability to nail every character, but it makes for amazing ensembles.
