ok, so, I've been worrying like a new mom, haha. I'm ridiculous.
it's just that Irving hadn't come out of the closet (*SNERK*) at all in going on 72 hours, and neither one of them has taken anything to eat or drink, that I can tell. food and water levels are the same, even though I know Seeley comes out at night and while I'm in school (makeup in the toilet...thanks, dude. *closes lid*).
last night I had an honest-to-god *nightmare* that I pulled Irving out a few days from now and his ribs were starting to show (bc he's already on the slender side) and when I did the pinch-test, he was severely dehydrated. *headdesk*
so the thing that woke me up this morning before my alarm was a plaintive Irving!meow. I've never heard Seeley vocalize, but Irving is all tiny and reedy, so I knew it was him. and I knew he wasn't calling for me, he was calling for Seeley. because I'm still the Thing To Not Be Trusted. evil kidnapper woman :) he's probably calling Seeley back to the hidey-hole.
I look in the closet. nobody's home. hrm. I'm eminently pleased that they've both ventured out. mayyybe a little food is gone, water's still the same. I peek around the corner and Seeley's on the top stair, peering at me all stealthy like _OO_ so once again, the question becomes, wtf is irving? I use the toilet, I pop in my contacts, I go downstairs (stupidly proud that Seeley didn't run away as I passed him) and poke around, no Irving. pour my cereal, check the bedroom, check the closet again, no Irving. check the bathroom again....curled as small as he can get behind the toilet...Irving. when I look at him and talk to him, his gaze remains stubbornly on the wall, and it's so LALALA YOU CAN'T SEE ME that it made me laugh.
and I realize that once again, I probably scared the crap out of him when I flushed. these kids have to learn that that's a bad hiding place, haha. but he hadn't run back to his hole while I was downstairs so...progress? maybe?
wow, I have it bad for these cats, yall.

Date: 2008-01-29 01:31 pm (UTC)Soon Irving will be all "Oh, her." And acting all cat-like and superior around you, except when he wants feeding.

Date: 2008-01-29 02:25 pm (UTC)The fact that Irving is calling plaintively for Seely is omgsocute, even though of course it would be great if he was already well-adjusted enough to take some comfort from you as well. <3 <3 <3

Date: 2008-01-29 02:51 pm (UTC)And he doesn't drink all that much either. But I've seen him try to drink out of the toilet once. When he came to us three months ago he wouldn't eat or drink either at first. So, basically, don't worry, it will all be better in a few days.

Date: 2008-01-29 03:47 pm (UTC)poor little irving, he's all shell-shocked. :)
yeah, i'd definitely suggest closing the toilet lid. because if the water bowl hasn't moved, then they're probably drinking out of it.
did the foster mom give you any guidelines about how to make sure they get socialized with humans? like, is there a point in time when you're supposed to just start cuddling them, regardless of what they want? and also: are they litter trained? i would guess so, since they were already in a house...i just worry about how wild they are. i want irving to come and climb in your lap already!

Date: 2008-01-29 04:02 pm (UTC)you know, she didn't, but if they're still zomg terrified of me in a few days and their eating/drinking hasn't resumed, I'll ask her about it. I was gonna call her today if they still hadn't come out of hiding, but irving squeaked under the wire, haha. I kind of take it as progress enough for right this second, though I'd prefer they were at least drinking water normally.
they're litter trained. they were the most-socialized ones in the bunch, they're just a lil traumatized by having their worlds up-ended, poor things.

They'll come out, you might want to actually get in there and pet them where ever they are so that they get used to you and your scent.I've had cats all my life so if you need any tips...*grins* i'm the crazy crazy cat lady.
but treats seem to help alot. ;)

As for the water thing, I'm betting on the toilet too. At our house, we have this tub that...yeah, the previous owners didn't bother to put in a cement base and so it sinks in the middle and, you know, water puddles there. Even though my cats know exactly where the water bowl is and one of my kids gives them fresh water every day, I still catch them in that damn tub drinking left over shower/bath water from that puddle. *shudders* It drives me crazy, but I figure there's just some kind of inbred instinct thing telling them to search for their own food/water. Or maybe they're just arrogant and are secretly saying, 'Ha! See, I don't really need you to take care of me, I just put up with you because it amuses me.'
But...so cute! that Irving was calling for Seeley like that. When we got our second cat (Patch) a few years ago, she was like that with our older cat (Gizmo). She followed her around and Gizmo mothered her and cuddled with her and basically coddled her until Patch got over the trauma of the move.

Date: 2008-01-29 07:29 pm (UTC)We're about to be in the same boat. I'm bringing home one of our barn cats this week. He's at the vet's now...being tested, fixed, ears, fleas, etc.
I'm kind of worried, but he's really gotten too tame to live feral anymore.

Date: 2008-01-29 09:05 pm (UTC)Once I baby-sat my father's cat and barely saw her for 18 days. The first day I was sure I had lost her since she found a hiding place where I couldn't see her - under the fridge! She would only come out at night after 9 to eat. She never really warmed to me or my appartment but she's a nutcase. Very savage.
My own cat - a very insecure one year old rescued from the streets and who had changed homes a couple of times - had the opposite reaction: the first days, she insisted on sitting on my lap all the time. That made working on the computer quite difficult...
I'm sure it will get better, once they realize you are a sweet humain being.
Oh by the way, it's Marie, under a new name. «waves»

Date: 2008-01-31 01:26 pm (UTC)Last night I met the ultimate kitten, my friend had her for two months and she's beautiful and adorable, fearless of humans, playful, cozy, social, baby-clumsy and purrs all the time. She is love.
Grown cats that stay stupidly scared of me for no reason kind of annoy the hell out of me, but if they're new or littl'uns it's cute. Kittys are fun.
